Matthew 6:25-33 Amplified
The Cure for Anxiety
25 “Therefore I tell you, stop being worried or anxious (perpetually uneasy, distracted) about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, as to what you will wear. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow [seed] nor reap [the harvest] nor gather [the crops] into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27And who of you by worrying can add one hour to [the length of] his life? 28And why are you worried about clothes? See how the lilies and wildflowers of the field grow; they do not labor nor do they spin [wool to make clothing], 29yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory and splendor dressed himself like one of these. 30But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive and green today and tomorrow is [cut and] thrown [as fuel] into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! 31Therefore do not worry or be anxious (perpetually uneasy, distracted), saying, ‘What are we going to eat?’ or ‘What are we going to drink?’ or ‘What are we going to wear?’ 32For the [pagan] Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; [but do not worry,] for your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all these things will be given to you also.
This is one of those passages of scripture that most of us have heard many, many times. In fact, you can probably quote parts of it without really even thinking about it. Same – but my knowledge of this scripture was just that – knowledge. I really hadn’t connected with the power of what these verses tell us until very recently.
We are in the middle of a long, ongoing pandemic. Elections take place tomorrow. Our economy is on shaky ground. Many of us lost incomes and security through all of this. It’s so easy to look at everything going and completely lose our peace.
But what does God say about all of this? In a passage of scripture labeled, “The Cure for Anxiety,” does He say to focus on your problems and try to figure solutions out all on your own? No, of course not. In the verses leading up to 33, He talked about being worried about your life! The things He mentioned, like what you are going to eat and drink, are foundational things. However, He made very clear, that we are NOT to be anxious about these things and instead, to seek Him and His righteousness first and THEN the things you need will be given to you.
How do you seek Him first? Here’s what I do. I start each day with communion, really focusing on what Jesus did for ME on the cross. I thank Him for His love and sacrifice and spend some time in that place of awe and reverence. Then, I find a way to get into the Word. Different things work for different people, but I find what works best for me is to listen to a podcast that breaks a topic down biblically and provides scripture references. I then like to read the scriptures on my Bible app in a few different translations and meditate on what I can learn from them.
I end my “set aside” time with the Lord by sitting quietly. It’s often in those quiet moments that new revelation will come to me about the very things I set aside.
God knows the way out of your circumstances. He knows what you need. He loves you so much that he provided an easy guide to follow in those moments when anxiety wants to overtake you. Stop what you are doing, table your thoughts and seek Him. He is working on your behalf, even when you can’t see what is happening. He loves you.
